Batian

Kenya's 2010 disease-resistant variety, bred to taste like the classic SL varieties; named after Mount Kenya's highest peak.

Batian was released in 2010 by Kenya's Coffee Research Institute and named after the highest peak of Mount Kenya. Like Ruiru 11 it resists coffee berry disease and leaf rust, but it's a tall plant, and it was bred with SL28 and SL34 in its family to keep their cup quality.

It mostly appears in Kenyan lots alongside the SL varieties, and its cups fit right in: blackcurrant, blackberry and hibiscus with bright acidity.
