Ruiru 11

A disease-resistant Kenyan variety released in 1985, usually grown and sold alongside SL28 and SL34.

Ruiru 11 was released in 1985 by Kenya's Coffee Research Station at Ruiru, bred to resist coffee berry disease and leaf rust, which had hit the classic SL varieties hard. It's a compact plant, so farmers can grow more trees per acre.

Early on it had a reputation for a plainer cup than SL28 and SL34, but on Kenya's best farms it's often blended in with them and the lots taste unmistakably Kenyan: blackcurrant, grapefruit and bright acidity.
