Parainema

A disease-resistant variety selected in Honduras, which surprised the trade with fruity, complex cups.

Parainema was selected in Honduras by IHCAFE, the national coffee institute, from Sarchimor material: a cross of Villa Sarchí and the Timor Hybrid. It was chosen for resistance to leaf rust and tolerance of nematodes, tiny roundworms that attack coffee roots.

Disease-resistant varieties are often assumed to taste plain, but Parainema has done well in Honduran quality competitions, with bright, fruity and sometimes tropical cups.
